REFLECTION OF A TRAINEE SONOGRAPHER

Reflecting on my experience as a trainee sonographer in Obstetric and Gynaecology ultrasound, I can safely say it was a rewarding yet challenging experience. Along with undertaking the academic workload of a PG cert, you are also learning an entirely new skill in the role of scanning patients. This was most notable when learning to scan obstetric patients, which requires a lot of patience, both when performing the scan and communicating with patients.  Learning to perform any scan in obstetrics requires a great deal of concentration and effort. This was probably the most challenging aspect of the course, as it is both mentally and physically tiring. This however was an area where I learnt the most from sonographers, who were incredibly patient and generous with their time by demonstrating to me the skills required for each scan and improving my knowledge of pathology.  In terms of gynaecology ultrasound, a lot of care and tact is also involved when communicating with patients in order

WELLBEING FOR THE SONOGRAPHER

Wellbeing Webinar 16th March 2021 We have all been working very hard through the pandemic and dealing with heightened emotions. The SOR are hosting a free webinar, more details below.  'The pandemic has increased the pressure on health care professionals, including sonographers who provide screening and symptomatic services. We know that this increasing level of stress can have a negative impact on your overall wellbeing. To tackle this, our upcoming webinar will empower you to develop an understanding of your current coping strategies. It will also help you to consider changes you can make, that will reduce the risk of burnout whilst you continue to work under extremely challenging circumstances. Clinical psychologist Dr. Judith Johnson, an expert in the field, will deliver an abridged version of her training for sonographers.' https://www.sor.org/events/2021-03-16--wellbeing-for-sonographers-11

SONOGRAPHERS UNDER ATTACK

'WE CANNOT ALLOW OBSTETRIC ULTRASOUND TO BECOME ENTERTAINMENT' SONOGRAPHERS UNDER ATTACK - SOR CALLS FOR GOVERNMENT ACTION. It appears we are not alone in feeling the pressure in the Obstetric setting, this feels all too familiar.  'We have had so much abuse, both face-to-face and on social media. People demanding to film the scan or facetime their family, while the important diagnostic element of the scan is largely ignored. I had a recent complaint, the basis of which was 'the sonographer was nice enough, chatty and explained the scan but there was no JOY in their voice when they announced the sex' The full article is published on the SOR Website or access it via the below link.  https://www.sor.org/news/sonographers-under-attack-sor-calls-government-action More from SOR News March 2021 Read Anna's all too familiar account of Obstetric scanning.
